11 days / 10 nights
Travelling in our own vehicles, we begin our adventure in Upington, where we meet at a comfortable en-route lodge for one night. This first evening is the perfect chance to settle in, meet fellow travellers, and prepare for the journey ahead.
The next day, we set off in convoy towards the heart of the Kalahari, heading to our first base at Twee Rivieren Rest Camp in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Driving in convoy keeps the group together, ensures safety, and allows us to share sightings along the way.
Some sections of the park roads may be corrugated, depending on when they were last graded. These stretches are part of the authentic Kalahari experience — offering a true sense of adventure as we traverse the vast desert landscapes and approach our first camp.
Enjoy comfortable SANParks chalets that have been carefully secured well in advance, ensuring we stay inside the heart of the parks where the real magic happens.
Our accommodation includes a range of chalets within South African National Parks camps, each offering single beds and en-suite bathrooms after a rewarding day of exploration. Staying inside the park allows us to experience the early morning atmosphere and late afternoon light that make places like the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park so special.

A small-group self-drive safari through the wild Northern Cape.
Travelling in our own vehicles, we enjoy the freedom of a classic African road trip while still sharing the experience together.
Our journey begins in Upington, where we meet at our comfortable en-route lodge for one night. This evening, with dinner included, gives everyone time to settle in after the 9-hour drive, meetup with fellow travellers, and chat through the exciting days ahead and discuss our desert adventure. After an early coffee and rusks start, we travel in convoy to Askham for breakfast. Thereafter travelling to the entrance of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, heading to Twee Rivieren Rest Camp, where we stay for four nights.
We then continue north through the park to Mata-Mata Rest Camp, where we stay for three nights. This quieter section of the park runs along the Auob River and offers beautiful scenery and rewarding wildlife sightings. It’s a wonderful place to slow down, observe carefully, and enjoy the rhythm of the desert. Leaving the Kgalagadi behind, we travel south to Augrabies Falls National Park for our final two nights.
The mighty Augrabies Falls makes its way through a dramatic granite gorge carved by the Orange River. The sound, spray, and scale of the falls create excellent opportunities for landscape and slow-shutter photography.
Early mornings and rewarding days
Wildlife is most active in the cooler hours of the day, so we start early to make the most of the beautiful desert light and the best sightings. These early starts are always worth it. This is not a rushed trip. We take our time, stop for sightings, and enjoy the landscapes. There will be plenty of opportunities to photograph wildlife, dramatic dunes, and beautiful desert light. Travelling with a small group creates a friendly environment where everyone shares the excitement of sightings and discoveries along the way. Life in the Kalahari follows the rhythm of nature — early mornings, midday breaks during the heat of the day, and afternoon drives as the light softens followed by a shared dinner usually under the stars, where the "Place of Thirst" will be quenched!
From the vast red dunes of the Kalahari to the powerful waters of Augrabies Falls, this journey offers constantly changing scenery and wonderful photographic moments.
Post-Shoot Editing Tutorials Using Lightroom/Photoshop: After a day in the field, we’ll gather for post-shoot editing sessions where you’ll learn how to enhance your images using Lightroom and Photoshop. These tutorials will cover everything from basic corrections like exposure and contrast adjustments to more advanced techniques like colour grading, sharpening, and noise reduction. You’ll walk away with polished, professional-grade photos.
Practical Tips and Hands-On Photography Sessions: Whilst travelling during the day in our vehicles, we will communicate via our walkie talkies. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced photographer we always have fun,

For our safari through the iconic red dunes of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, we recommend bringing a DSLR or mirrorless camera to capture the incredible wildlife and dramatic desert landscapes.
A telephoto lens (200–600mm) is particularly valuable in the Kgalagadi, allowing you to photograph predators, birds of prey, and other wildlife from a comfortable distance without disturbing them. A mid-range zoom (70–200mm) is perfect for animals that come closer to the vehicle, as well as for environmental wildlife portraits. For the sweeping red dunes, camelthorn trees, and vast Kalahari skies, a wide-angle lens (16–35mm) is ideal.
A beanbag or small support cushion is extremely useful for stabilising your camera on the window frame of your vehicle during game drives. While a tripod can be helpful at the lodge for sunrise, sunset, or night photography, most wildlife photography will be done from the vehicle.
The Kalahari is dry and dusty, so be sure to bring extra batteries, high-capacity memory cards, and a lens cleaning kit to keep your equipment in top condition. A comfortable camera bag is also recommended to keep your gear protected and easily accessible throughout the trip.
With the right equipment and a little patience, the Kgalagadi offers extraordinary opportunities to photograph lions on the dunes, dramatic skies, and the rich colours of the Kalahari landscape.
The weather in Kgalagadi during October is typically hot, dry and wonderfully dramatic for wildlife photography. Daytime temperatures often range from 30°C to 40°C , with clear blue skies and intense sunlight that creates striking contrasts in the red Kalahari dunes.
Early mornings are cooler and particularly rewarding for game viewing and photography, with soft golden light and more active wildlife. As the day heats up, animals often gather around waterholes, offering excellent photographic opportunities.
Evenings bring a welcome drop in temperature, although nights can still be warm. A light jacket or fleece is useful for early morning drives before the sun rises. Rain is uncommon in October, but occasional dramatic thunderclouds can build on the horizon, adding beautiful atmosphere to the vast desert landscapes.
The dry conditions mean vegetation is sparse, making wildlife easier to spot against the iconic red sand dunes. The crisp air, open skies and glowing sunsets create spectacular photographic conditions, so come prepared for heat, plenty of sunshine and unforgettable Kalahari light.
Please let us know of any dietary restrictions or allergies at the time of booking. As everyone brings their own food and the local shops are well stocked, you’ll have plenty of flexibility to cater for your own preferences. If there is anything specific we should be aware of, we’ll gladly do our best to assist where possible during the tour.
We understand that plans can change. Our cancellation and rescheduling policies are designed to be flexible and fair. Please refer to our cancellation policy. If you need to make changes, contact us as soon as possible, and we’ll do our best to assist you.
Travel times throughout the tour will vary depending on distance, road conditions, and wildlife sightings along the way. Most drives are relaxed and scenic, generally ranging between 2 and 5 hours. We take our time, enjoy the landscapes, and stop whenever something special appears — which in places like the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park happens more often than you might expect.
This style reassures travellers that the trip isn’t rushed while still setting expectations clearly.
To ensure a personalized and immersive experience, we limit the tour to a small group of participants. This allows for individual attention from our guide. The maximum group size is typically around 10 people, ensuring that everyone has ample space and opportunity to get the most out of their photographic journey.
